The Disappearing WWII Airfields of Yorkshire

WWII Airfields of Yorkshire

Between 1939 – 1945 Yorkshire like many other counties in the UK saw large amounts of land being requisitioned by the Air Ministry to build airfields that would become home to thousands of servicemen from all over the world. Today many of these airfields have been forgotten and returned to their original use as farmland, or their runways have long since been torn up and used as aggregates for building and repairing the ever expanding motorway networks that criss-cross this green and pleasant land. There are a handful that are still in active use and a few have been partially saved by being used for other purposes such as industrial sites.
